DUDHWA
About Dudhwa National Park

Dudhwa lies along the Indo-Nepal border in the Terai belt, where vast grasslands merge with dense Sal forests and sprawling wetlands. The park’s mosaic of swamps, grasslands, and woodlands supports a spectacular diversity of wildlife. Towering Sal trees dominate the forest canopy, while tall elephant grasses provide cover for large mammals. The marshes are alive with birdlife, including the stately Sarus Crane and a host of wetland species. Dudhwa is also one of the few places in India where one can encounter the Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, reintroduced into its tall grass habitats.

Dudhwa National Park is known for its rare and endangered species, especially the Swamp Deer (Barasingha), whose population here is among the largest in the world. Tigers and leopards are present, though sightings are less frequent due to the dense Terai vegetation. Other mammals include Asiatic elephants, one-horned rhinoceros (in the reintroduced population), sloth bears, jackals, fishing cats, and civets. Reptiles like gharials, marsh crocodiles, and monitor lizards thrive in its wetland habitats. Dudhwa also hosts an impressive birdlife with more than 450 bird species, including the Bengal florican, painted storks, sarus cranes, great slaty woodpecker, and a wide array of raptors and migratory waterfowl.
