In a remarkable botanical discovery, Mycetia malayana (Rubiaceae), a rare plant species previously known only from Malaya, Borneo, and Thailand — and now extinct in Singapore — has been recorded in India for the first time. 

The finding was made during a field study near Kachari Waterfall in the Kanchanpur sub-division of Tripura’s North District. “Until now, eight species of Mycetia were known from India. This study adds a ninth species to the country’s flora.

A remarkable botanical find has been made by researchers in Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh. They have identified the orchid species Gastrochilus pechei (Rchb f) Kuntze for the first time in India.

Scientists from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, have reported the presence of two rare keelback snakes in the country. The Rakhine Keelback (Herpetoreas davidi) and the Kachin Hills Keelback (Hebius gilhodesi). Until now, both species were believed to exist only in neighbouring Myanmar.

A new flowering plant species, named Corydalis shiyomiensis, has been identified in the untouched forests of Shi Yomi district, part of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot.

Scientists discover new balsam flower species in Arunachal's West Kameng. A team from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) has identified a new species of balsam flower, Impatiens rajibiana, in the natural forests of Shergaon in West Kameng district. India currently has around 230 known balsam species, including well-known varieties like Impatiens balsamina (garden balsam or touch-me-not).

A total of 235 species of butterflies, including 35 rare and uncommon species, were recorded during the three-day 2nd Wakro Butterfly Meet. The event, which celebrated the 8th Northeast Butterfly Meet at Wakro and Kamlang Tiger Reserve in Arunachal’s Lohit district.

Botanists in Arunachal Pradesh have made a remarkable discovery. They have identified two rare species of Hoya plants in the state’s forests. One species, Hoya chinghungensis, has been recorded in India for the first time. The other, Hoya acuminata, is newly reported from Arunachal Pradesh.

After conducting research for many years, scientists have confirmed discovery of 13 new amphibian species in North East India. Researchers said among the 13 new species, six were found in Arunachal Pradesh, three in Meghalaya, and one each in Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur. According to the researchers, this scientific advancement highlights the hidden biodiversity of the northeastern region, which is part of two global biodiversity hotspots. 

After a recent rapid survey conducted by the Kaziranga park authorities has identified an impressive 77 species of freshwater fish. This represents a significant portion of Assam's 216 indigenous fish species and contributes to the Northeast's remarkable total of 422 native fish species.

Additionally, the park is home to 108 species of amphibians and reptiles, which is notably higher than the 70-plus species recorded in other regions of the state, contributing to the 274-plus herpetofaunal species documented in the Northeast.

Gecko found in Assam, The bent-toed gecko, known scientifically as Cyrtodactylus bapme, turned up in the hills around Urpad Beel, which is a wetland area. Originally described a few years ago from nearby Meghalaya, this marks the first confirmed record of the gecko in Assam.

Lost Himalayan blueberry rediscovered in Arunachal Pradesh after 188 years: Rare Vaccinium piliferum found in dense forests. The plant is known as Vaccinium piliferum, a species tucked within a broader family that includes better-known berry shrubs found in colder regions. Its presence in historical literature comes from brief encounters by botanists working in the eastern Himalayan belt during the 1800s. One early record dates back to the 1830s, when it was noted in the Mishmi Hills.
