Butterfly
First-ever sighting in India of High Altitude dwelling Rare Chinese Rose Windmill Butterfly in the North East State of Arunachal Pradesh.
A new species of Butterfly- The Sahyadri Spotted Flitter, discovered in the Biodiversity hotspot of Western Ghats in the State of Kerala.

Dhole
Rare black wild dog (Dhole) spotted in Sahyadri Tiger reserve after 90 years. The last documented sighting of a melanistic dhole was back in 1936 near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Warbler
Long billed bush warbler, highly elusive bird has been sighted after a gap of 46 long year in Ladakh. The bird was found in a willow amidst terraced ?elds in Kargil's Suru Valley. It’s the ?rst time it has been seen on a willow, which will now be added to its known habitats.

Hornbill
India's First Hornbill Conservation Centre to Come up at Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu.The facility will focus on four hornbill species native to the Western Ghats - the Great Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, and Indian Grey Hornbill.

Caracal
The forests of Madhya Pradesh just shared a quiet secret. A caracal—one of India’s rarest wild cats—has been caught on camera. This is first sighting in nearly 20 years.

Wetland- Ramsar Site
India's two more wetlands - both in Bihar - have been included in the global list of Ramsar Convention sites as the wetlands of international importance. It brings the total number of such sites in India to 93, continuing the country's top position in Asia and third in the world after the UK (176) and Mexico (144) in terms of total number of Ramsar sites.                                                                                                               The two new additions are Gokul Jalashay in Buxar district and Udaipur Jheel in West Champaran district, bringing the total number of such wetlands to five in Bihar.The number of Indian sites in the list has increased from 26 in 2012 to 93 in 2025, spread over 13,60,718 hectares, of which 51 wetlands have been added since 2020. Globally, there are 2,544 Ramsar sites.

Corbett
Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR), renowned globally for its majestic tigers, is proving to be an equally crucial sanctuary for avian predators. A survey conducted jointly by the State Forest Department and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has revealed the presence of an astonishing 30 species of raptors within the reserve’s boundaries.

Snow Leopard
Recent study has found that almost 68 percent of Snow Leopard in India are concentrated in Ladakh. Their numbers are around 477 out of a total 709 found in Himalayan range of India.

Geckos
A professor from the Zoology department of Mizoram University (MZU), along with his research scholar and co-researchers, discovered two new species of bent-toed geckos (Cyrtodactylus) in the northern Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Moths
A young research scholar, pursuing her doctoral degree in Zoology in Madurai, has so far documented around 450 species of moths at the Kanniyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary -- home to diverse species of moths that have largely remained unidentified. The presence of four rare species -- Srilankan Atlas moth, Indian Moon moth, Tasar Silk moth, and Golden Emperor moth -- has been recorded during the documentation
 

Slender Gecko
Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of slender gecko in Andhra Pradesh. It has been officially named Hemiphyllodactylus venkatadri sp. nov, paying homage to the locality - the sacred Venkatadri Hills in Tirumala.

Wolf Snake

New Leopard Gecko
Scientists have officially identified a new species of leopard gecko from the rocky forests of Bihar’s Kaimur hills, marking the first recorded leopard gecko species ever discovered in the state. Named Eublepharis jhuma or Jhuma’s leopard gecko, the reptile was first spotted during wildlife surveys in 2021 but only recently confirmed as a completely distinct species after detailed DNA and physical analysis. Researchers say the discovery is significant because leopard geckos are heavily trafficked in the illegal.

Pit Viper
3 new species of Himalayan pit viper discovered in Pakistan and Nepal. The most elusive and venomous Himalayan pit viper is now understood to be five distinct species, three of which have never been documented before,

BATS- Least studied mammals
India is home to 135 bat species, including 16 endemic, but they are among some of the least studied mammals, with 35 species still data deficient or unassessed. In a study conducted over 2 years by 34 experts from 27 Institutes, experts found West Bengal (68 species), Meghalaya (66 species), and Uttarakhand (52 species) are India’s bat diversity hotspots. Punjab and Haryana had the least diversity among states, reporting just five species each. Delhi has 15 bat species.  Out of the 16 species endemic to India, four (the Sombre Bat, the Meghalaya Thick-thumbed Bat, the Rainforest Tube-nosed Bat, and Peter’s Tube-nosed Bat) were found endemic to the Himalayas and the northeast. Four species endemic to the Western Ghats included Salim Ali’s Fruit Bat (Latidens salimalii), the Pomona Leaf-nosed Bat (Hipposideros pomona), Peyton’s Whiskered Myotis (Myotis peytoni), and Srini’s Long-fingered Bat.
